Were U.S. physicians informed about the consequences of irradiation for persons who immigrated to the USA from places contaminated with radionuclides after the Chernobyl accident? |
Varied multifold scientific studies were conducted for years according to national and international programs, in which the leading medical institutions and prominent scientists from many countries have participated, including the USA, and, in particular, Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. Scientific conferences dedicated to medical aspects of health consequences of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant accident were and are conducted in many countries with the participation of practicing physicians.
Lastly, articles are published in many scientific and medical magazines which are devoted to the medical problems of diagnosis, prophylaxis, and medical treatment of persons exposed to irradiation during the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant accident.
A letter written by Baylor College of Medicine and the Hadassah scientific medical organization was sent to physicians which supervised the participants of American registry. This letter described the possible health consequences after the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant accident as well as the required measures for medical aid and prophylaxis of possible negative changes in health.
